Drafted first overall by the New York Islanders in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, he would play nine season on Long Island before signing as a free agent with his favourite childhood team, the Maple Leafs. In his first season with the Leafs, he played in all 82 games registering a career high 88 points and leading the Leafs to a playoff berth. Tavares has been named to six NHL All-Star Games and was a finalist for the Hart Memorial Trophy in 2015.
