Blue Jays vs Red Sox (27.06.22)

Just two days prior, Kevin Gausman set an early tone for the Blue Jays in the opener of a key three-game series against the Boston Red Sox on Monday night at the Rogers Centre.

Gausman threw seven shutout innings — retiring the first eight batters in order — in a 7-2 Blue Jays victory that ended Boston's seven-game winning streak. Gausman tied his season high with 10 strikeouts over seven shutout innings, holding the Sox to just four hits, one of which was a ground ball that bounced off second base. It’s the third time this season he’s dominated the Red Sox, having now allowed just one earned run against them in 21 innings of work.

This game kicked off an eight-game homestand for the Blue Jays against American League East division teams. Toronto will play a rare five-game series later in the week — including a Saturday doubleheader — against the Tampa Bay Rays, who are a half-game behind Toronto in the standings.

A Look at Gausman's Rise to the Major League

Kevin Gausman’s been a starting pitcher for the majority of his career, and at times, a very successful one. Known for his devastating split-fingered fastball, it's taken Gausman years of trial-and-error for the pitch to become what it is today — arguably the best splitter in Major League Baseball.

In his early days at Grandview High School in Aurora, Colo., Gausman played for the school's baseball team as a pitcher and built a reputation with his power — throwing as fast as 97/98 [mph]. But he understood that in order to thrive after his sophomore year (tenth grade), he needed another off-speed pitch he could rely on. Under guidance of Chris Baum (the junior varsity coach at Grandview at the time), Gausman focused in on developing his splitter.

At first the splitter was difficult for Gausman to figure out but he kept working at it regularly over the next two years of high school and eventually gained a better feel for the pitch.

Gausman played in a California collegiate league the summer after graduation and continued to diligently fine-tune the his pitch. This is when Gausman discovered that he could manipulate movement and speed depending on where he placed his thumb on the ball.

Gausman attended Louisiana State University (LSU), where he played collage baseball for the LSU Tigers baseball team. When he arrived at LSU in 2011, Gausman's teammates were amazed by his newly-discovered thumb technique and even nicknamed his pitch "The Waterfall".

Baltimore Orioles (2013-18)

At the 2012 MLB Draft, Gausman was selected fourth overall by the Baltimore Orioles and debuted the following season on May 23, 2013 in a game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

In his debut against the Blue Jays, Gausman pitched five innings and allowed seven hits, four runs, and two walks, also adding five strikeouts. Gausman picked up the loss as the Orioles fell 12–6 to the Blue Jays. In his first five years in the majors, Gausman posted an ERA-plus of 101, a number that placed him almost exactly at the league average. Deemed as a 'rebuilding' decision, the Orioles traded Gausman to the Atlanta Braves in the middle of the 2018 season.

Atlanta Braves (2018-19)

With the Atlanta Braves, Gausman posted a 2.87 ERA across 10 starts. However, during spring training in 2019, Gausman dealt with a sore shoulder and began the season rehabilitating in the minor leagues, becoming a reliever for the Cincinnati Reds. Then on Dec. 2, 2019 Gausman became a free agent.

San Francisco Giants (2020-21)

On Dec. 10, 2019, Gausman signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco Giants. Gausman excelled in San Francisco during the COVID-shortened 2020 season, in which he was 3–3 with a 3.62 ERA and 15 walks and 79 strikeouts in 10 starts.

However, Gausman fully realized his potential the following season in 2021 when he threw 1,061 splits (35.3% of his pitches), and hurled his fastball 52.7% of the time. Gausman was even named the National League Pitcher of the Month in May 2021. With this deadly combination working, Gausman was 14-6 with a 2.81 earned-run average and 227 strikeouts in 192 innings for San Francisco, numbers that earned him his first all-star nod.

Toronto Blue Jays (2022-Present)

Gausman has continued to dominate through the first couple months of this season after making his Blue Jays debut on April 9, 2022. Since then, Gausman has compiled a 2.93 ERA over his first fifteen starts. The splitter has arrived in Toronto as a full on power house and we are excited to experience this new era of Gausman's promising career.
